Eating Disordersby Charles E. Henderson, Ph.D. | ||
Eating disorders can be extremely serious. Bulimia and anorexia are most commonly talke about, but they are not the only eating disorders. Any eating disorder must be acknowledged and dealt with to win the battle for weight control. |
Serious eating disorders such as anorexia and buliemia are no laughing matter. They require professional treatment. No one should try to treat these diseases entirely on his or her own. Please note, however, that none of the procedures or processes presented here or anyplace else in the Hypnotica Web site will interfere with professional treatment. In fact, it is considered a good thing for a patient to be involved in his or her own treatment and the methods presented in Hypnotica have been known to make the difference between the success and failure of a professional regimen of treatment. There are numerous, less severe kinds of eating disorders that generally go unnamed, at least clinically, and are sources of great distress to their sufferers. In fact, the absence of clinical jargon with which to label these distressing conditions makes them even harder for their victims to deal with. Think of it this way. What is your opinion of someone who daily (and often more than once a day) gorges herself on junk food and then purposely makes herself puke it up? "Wait a minute," you're thinking, "isn't that a 'bulemic' who 'purges' after 'binging'?" Of course it is! See how much difference the "medical" terminology makes? It seems to be, well, a little more dignified somehow. This is part of a larger, gradual creep of concepts and terms from those of life's daily problems to medical emergencies. These former "problems" are now medicalized and come with treatment protocols, prescriptive pharmacology and all the other legitimizing paraphernalia of the medical/pharmaceutical industry. So the person who a couple of generations back would have been thought of as a gluttonous nut is now the victim of a medical condition.
Yet compulsive eating without purging is no different, in itself, from compulsive eating followed by purging (bulimia). It is just as much an eating disorder as any other. Both forms of compulsive eating described here can kill you. It is just that the bulimic form will get you sooner and for different reasons. Regardless of your medical category or the terminology used to describe your behavior, if you are compulsively overeating you need to get control of yourself. This is not to simply say, "oh, just get a grip!" We know it is not that easy. For whatever your reasons, your subconscious mind is seriously dysfunctional and you must get it to change. You may be able to do it yourself, on your own. Many people do, sometimes with surprising ease once they approach it from this direction. If not, then get help. But one way or the other, you must change. And if you are purging, you must stop. I'm not kidding: if you don't stop, sooner or later it will kill you. Same thing if you are anorexic. People die from this, too. You have to get in there and make changes at the subconscious level so you can eat again. Normally, healthily. Either with help or on your own, you can do it.
