A standard (and perfectly logical) question is, How long does it take? Elsewhere I have presented precise mathematical formulas for how much weight you as an individual can lose and how long it will take. But frankly the math is a little difficult for lots of people, and it is not really all that important.
The short answer is that it is not uncommon to lose large amounts of weight in the first few weeks. But for the long haul it is not possible – and, for many reasons, not desirable – to lose more than approximately two pounds a week.
(Obese people can sometimes lose faster until their weight gets down to "merely overweight." It is a good idea to have medical advice about weight control.)
